Article 1 Degree Requirements
1. Graduation Credit Requirements
  • 24 Credits of Biomedical Engineering specific courses (excluding seminars, research, thesis, or language courses)
    • minimum of 15 credits must be from the department
  • Other courses to be counted towards graduation must be approved by a research advisor.
2. Mandatory Courses
  • Principles of Biomedical Engineering
  • Seminar on Biomedical Engineering (required each semester, but only a maxiumum of four credits may count towards graduation)
    • Students that graduate early may apply for an exemption
  • Masters Thesis(required the last semester)
  • Students without a background in the medical sciences must also take Human Anatomy and Physiology

Note:

  • Graduate students studying abroad via student exchange program, through the Ministry of Education, or through an Advisor-mandated plan to study abroad, should still take Seminar on Biomedical Engineering and Seminar during their period of overseas study
  • Seminars on Biomedical Engineering must be submitted before the end of the semester along with the study reports and an evaluation letter from the instructor from the exchange school, laboratory, host, or the main course. The research advisor will then score the submitted materials
  • Research for the seminar course is subject to the research advisor
3. Credit Exemptions
  • Exemptions from credit requirements may be granted when the student has petitioned within the timeframe stipulated by university regulations and has received the approval of the department's Curriculum Committee.
Article 2

Examination:

  • Preliminary review of the thesis plan must be completed before the masters thesis examination, in accordance with the procedures stipulated in Appendix 1
  • The examination itself shall be handled in accordance with the regulations of the school
Article 3 Part-time off-campus postgraduates and school time regulations
1.

The minimum length of study for off-campus full-time graduate students must be extended by one year

2.

Off-campus full-time graduate students must stay on campus for at least three full days a week (exemptions for two days may be granted if experiments related to the thesis must be conducted in other institutions), and the consent of the hosting institution, agency, or company must be obtained before admission. Registration can only be complete after supplementary documentation authorizing off-campus research has been reviewed. A full-time student who has not submitted authorization for their full-time off-campus status, shall be subject severe penalties determined by the department.

3.

When the graduate student needs to conduct experiments in an institution other than the department due to equipment requirements, a written application must be submitted consisting of research advisor consent and a written progress report from the hosting institute.

Article 4
  • Other matters not covered within these articles shall be handled in accordance with the regulations of the department, the university, and the Ministry of Education
Article 5
  • This regulation shall be implemented after the approval of the department meeting, and the same applies when it is revised.

Appendix 1:Procedures for Preliminary Review of Master Thesis Proposal

 1. Time of Review: A preliminary review of the Thesis Proposal must pass a review 4 months before the thesis examination
 2. The committee must consist of the instructor (convener) in addition to 3 to 5 committee members.

The suggested items must be listed and records and tracked and reviewed in the essay oral examination.

3. The content of the thesis: 1. Thesis Title
2. The development, objectives, and significance of the proposed reseach
3. A bibliography
4. A thesis outline
5. A discussion of initial finidings in current literature
6. Potential problems and solutions

 4.  If the Thesis Proposal does not pass review, the student may petition for a second review. If the Thesis Proposal fails the supplementary review again, the student may not take the Thesis Examination that semester.

Article 1 Course and Credit Requirements
1. Graduation Credit Requirements
  • 18 Credits are required to graduate (excluding Seminars on Advanced Biomedical Engineering, Seminar, Dissertation [Thesis (Ph.D.)], or language courses).
    • A minimum of 9 credits must be from courses in this Institute.
2. Mandatory Courses
  • Principles of Biomedical Engineering
  • Dissertation (PhD) (required during the final semester)
  • Seminar (required each semester, but exemptions may be granted during the last semester)
  • Seminar on Advanced Biomedical Engineering (required each semester)
    • only a maximum of four credits from this course may be counted toward graduation)

Note:

  • For research needs requiring research abroad for more than one month (inclusive), seminar courses for the semester can be exempted with the consent of the research advisor and the department chair's approval.
3. Other Course Requirements

In addition to the required courses listed in the previous section, doctoral students must complete the following courses before applying for permission to take the Dissertation Examination.

  1. Two core courses in the Institute
    The core courses are to be stipulated elsewhere. Please see Appendix One.
  2. Two Life Sciences courses
    (1) Human Physiology and Anatomy in Biomedical Engineering (I) and (II) (students with six or more undergraduate credits in either Physiology or Anatomy may petition for an exemption)
    (2) A relevant Life Sciences course at the graduate level of at least three credits other than those listed in the preceding paragraph
  3. Two Mathematics courses
    (1) Mathematics for Biomedical Engineering (1) and (2) (students with six or more credits of undergraduate-level Engineering Mathematics may petition for an exemption)
    (2) A relevant Mathematics course at the graduate level of at least three credits other than those listed in (1)
4. Credit Requirement Exemption
  • Exemptions from credit requirements may be granted when the student has petitioned within the time frame stipulated by university regulations and received the approval of the Institute’s Curriculum Committee.
5. Course Requirement Exemption
  • Exemptions from required courses may be granted when the student has petitioned within one month of matriculation and received the approval of the Institute's Curriculum Committee.
6. English Language Requirement
  • Students must pass Article 7 of the School’s Advanced English Course Requirements (excluding the school’s Advanced English Courses) or complete graduate online English (3) [004 M0130] before graduation. (Applicable to doctoral students enrolled after 2015).
Article 2
  • All doctoral students must participate in the Doctoral Degree Qualifying Examination. The examination is a written test. Students wishing to take the examination must apply within the stipulated period of time. Please refer to Appendix Two for details about the Qualifying Examination.
Article 3 The Doctoral Degree Examination
1.

Doctoral students must pass the Doctoral Degree Qualifying Examination and Publication and Coursework Review before arranging to take the Degree Examination. Please refer to Appendix Two for details about the Doctoral Degree Qualifying Examination.

2.

Publications and Coursework Review: Before organizing a Dissertation Examination Committee and taking the Dissertation Examination, students must first complete a Publications and Coursework Review application form, which must also include a list of courses taken and a list of publications and related information and be signed by the student’s advisor, and submit these to the Academic Affairs Committee for Dissertation Examination Qualification Review by the end of either March, June, September or December.

Article 4 Examination:
1. Applicants for the doctoral dissertation examination must first pass the examination qualification examination specified in the preceding paragraph.
2. In addition to the director or the candidate's research advisor, at least one member of the examination committee must be an expert specializing in the candidate's research topic, and one other must be an expert specializing in subjects other than the candidate's research topic.
3. The first half of the thesis exam shall be published publicly. An announcement of the examination shall be posted one week prior to the examination date. Anyone is welcome to attend, ask questions, or express opinions. The second half of the exam shall be private, only attended by members of the exam committee
Article 5
  • Other matters not stipulated in these Regulations should be handled in accordance with regulations of the Institute, university, or Ministry of Education.
Article 6
  • These regulations are thereto implemented upon approval of the academic curriculum committee. Further revisions are subject to the same stipulations

 Appendix Two:Doctoral Graduation Requirements


1. The Doctoral Degree Qualifying Examination
I. PhD Candidates are required to complete the qualification examination within 7 semesters after admission (excluding the period of suspension). The qualification examination is divided into two parts:
(1) Written examination: Physiology and Engineering Mathematics ﹝Exam scope: Ordinary differential equations (including Laplace transformation) ), linear algebra, and Fourier series and Fourier transformation﹞
(2) Dissertation proposal: The amount of submissions allowed for a dissertation is limited to two times, within 7 semesters of admission (the first semester is counted before January 31, and the second semester is July 31). The dessertation proposal committee shall consist of 3 to 5 members invited by the chair of the department. At least one of the committee must be from outside the department. The research advisor acts as convener of the dissertation proposal committee, but cannot participate in voting.
II. For the written test, each student can the exam a maximum of two times. Subjects passed during first exam, should not be retaken the second time. Candidates that fail the written test may apply to the Academic Committee for reconsideration.
III. A passing score for the qualifying examination written test is 70 points (inclusive) or determined by the professor that issued the question.
IV. Written test application date is on May 1 to May 31 of each year.
V. The written part is held within two weeks after the end of the second semester of each academic year.
VI. Those who do not pass the dissertation proposal will fail the qualification examination.
2.

Paper publication:

Journal papers and international conference papers should be published with the department as the first primary institution, and the full-time research advisor must be from the department and listed as an author. The calculation of credits from journal paper publications shall be based on the latest journal ranking points at the time of application review. If the journal ranking in the year of publication of the paper are higher than the latest journal ranking points, a certificate can be submitted, and the academic committee will consider which ranking to choose

I. Before graduation, Candidates of the doctoral program must have at least five points from the publication of journal papers. The candidate must be first author of a publication recieving at least three points (if there is a common first author, only the first author will be recognized). Points are calculated as follows:
(1) The impact factor (I.F.) of the journal ranked in the top 25% (inclusive) of the field is four points.
(2) The journal impact factor (I.F.) ranking in the top 50% (inclusive) of the field is three points.
(3) The journal impact factor (I.F.) ranking in the top 75% (inclusive) of the field is two points.
(4) Other SCI journals are one point.
(5) The journal Biomedical Engineering: Applications, Basis, and Communications (at most one) is the editor-in-chief of this department.
(6) Those who have obtained domestic and foreign invention patents after the examination and approval of the school’s research and development committee will recieve one point (at most one point). A point from a patent can only be allocated to one candidate. The recipient of the point must have signed written consent of the patent's other co-authors for its use in the candidate's graduation scoring.
(7) Those who have applied for the technical transfer of the invention patent through the school's research and development meeting will have one point (at most one point).  A point from a technical transfer can only be allocated to one candidate. The recipient of the point must have signed written consent of the technical transfer's other applicants for its use in the candidate's graduation scoring.
II. A publication of at least one paper in an international academic conference, either oral or poster paper, where the candidate must be the first author.
3. These regulations are thereto implemented upon approval of the academic curriculum committee. Further revisions are subject to the same stipulations

1. Exemptions for Credit Requirements
(1)

Incoming candidates of the master or doctoral program that have previously taken relevant courses specified by the department, may apply for credit credit according to the method and time specified by the school after admission.

For course exemption, please provide the content breakdown of the courses you have completed as a reference. With the review and approval of the Academic Committee, an exemption may be granted.

(2)

Candidates of the doctoral program applying for credit exemption may only be exempt for one semesters worth of "Introduction to Biomedical Engineering".

Candidates of the master's program applying for credit exemption may only be exempt for one semesters worth of "Introduction to Medical Engineering" and one elective course from the department, for a total of two courses.

The number of courses offered per semester is limited.

(3)

The credits of the master's courses for which course credit is applied shall not be the graduation credits that should be taken by the university.

(4)

The final credit count of all courses will be reviewed and decided by the academic curriculum committee according to regulations.
